App Intro

HabitBull’s homepage says, “Easily break bad habits like smoking, drinking or nail-biting, or build positive habits like fitness, meditation or reading.” Get reminders, see your progress with simple graphs, sync across all your devices, safely store your data in the cloud, and more. As far as habit-tracking apps go, HabitBull is pretty customizable. Plus, because you pay for it annually, you don’t have to deal with ads at all. This is a great tool for box-checkers and those who like to visualize progress. Keep it 100% and track things honestly and accurately for the best results.

Likes/Dislikes

Likes

  • If you’re starting from scratch, HabitBull suggests categories and habits to choose from. If none of the defaults fit quite right, you can create your own habits.
  • You can also customize the way you track your habit successes, via numbers (and more specific metrics) or via yes/no, which means you can get an in-depth view of your progress and potential shortcomings. We liked being able to decide how often and how many times you need to perform a habit in addition to the customized way of tracking.
  • The UI was pretty solid in that you can quickly see your progress and pinpoint where and when you’ve fallen short with a daily, weekly, or monthly glance.

Disikes

  • That being said, there were almost too many suggested habits. If you’re starting from a New Year’s Resolution and have never tracked habits before, you may get overwhelmed and not know where to start or how many habits are too many to start with.
  • For what the app is and what it can do, the $19.99/annual cost is a little lofty. Everything leads you to believe the app is free (app store, download, home page), but after you’ve downloaded it, you’re told it’s only a free trial and you have to pay to continue services, which is a little deceptive.
  • Some reviews say that the app seems simple but ends up being a bit complicated once you get into the setup. Other reviews say that in recent software updates across both devices, the app crashes a lot to the point that people can’t open and use it.

The Bottom Line

While the app is decent as far as habit-tracking apps go, there are free alternatives that can do the same thing. Additionally, other available paid apps and services offer a few more bells and whistles than HabitBull provides. It’s a user-friendly, relatively simple productivity app that has the potential to improve productivity and help users form habits if they are willing to give it an earnest effort. But, in our professional opinion, you’re better off starting with a free app and opting into paid subscriptions if you find that the routine is working for you.
